Shout-out to Jr High Coaches

A female junior high school coach is seen in front of two basketball hoops while giving instruction

Each country is unique regarding their education. However, if you grew up in the United States, you would probably have some sports memories dating back to Jr. High. For most young athletes in public education, this is often their first opportunity to represent their school’s sports team. Extra practices and a series of games are often crammed in an already busy part of the school year, and are over before you know it.

While creating memories for students and having parents excited cheering them on, one select group of people sometimes goes unnoticed. It is partly because they simultaneously move over to the next sport in line, waiting to be played. Another reason why they seem so invisible is because they are really skilled at what they are doing and they always leave the spotlight to the students.

So it is about time to give a well deserved shout out to Junior High Sports Coaches and the extra effort, energy and enthusiasm they put in after school hours to give young athletes great memories.

Differences with High School and College Athletics

It might be good, if you are not familiar with athletics in middle school, to draw up some comparisons to high school or college sports and coaches. First of all, high school and college coaches have double the amount of years they can spend with athletes compared to coaches at middle schools that cover just 7th and 8th grade,

Second, the Junior High seasons last shorter than high school sports seasons. Third, for indoor and outdoor sports, the accommodation that is being used is always under a roof, a nice maintained field with bright lights or a professional track versus middle schools where at a lot of places, student athletes still play and practice outside on blacktop or what once were grassy fields. Last but not least, a high school or college coach has an extra coaching staff at their disposal, including often a physical trainer.

Multitasking

Have you ever realized how many different hats a Jr. High Coach wears? Over the past years, I witnessed five extremely enthusiastic, compassionate and brilliant Junior High Coaches. What they all had in common was going the extra mile… Whether it was in holding tryouts, arranging school buses and chaperoning fifteen to twenty teenagers on their own. Or jumping on the opportunity to have players practice extra hours, or in communicating with parents and making sure what was expected of students was always clear. They all went above and beyond!

While witnessing your kids play games for their Junior High school, have you ever wondered how common it is in a lot of other professions, to divide the tasks Junior High Coaches take on by themselves? If not, next time you should.

Junior High Coaches have this knack for making things happen. Out of my own experience I know it comes natural for most Physical Education teachers who fulfill coaching roles. But also teachers, with an excitement for a certain sport, who stand out in encouraging students while at the same time being strict regarding what is expected, make great Jr. High coaches!

Going the extra mile

As a parent, witnessing my teenagers be surrounded by great, encouraging, knowledgeable and caring role models makes my task as a parent at home a lot easier. Watching sports games that were quite often scheduled back-to-back so the boys teams would root on the girls and vice versa, gave me the chance to see how equally excited both girls and boys teams were being coached. As it should! I truly admire how selfless these teachers and coaches provided many hours of practices and games and were so dedicated, after having taught a full day already.

So here is a big Thank You to all the Junior High Coaches that gave my kids a chance to play on their team, and an equally big Thank You to all the Coaches at every Junior High who are putting in their excitement, love and knowledge regarding teaching and coaching sports. Our kids are better off because of the influence you have had on them. You have all helped so many teenagers believe in themselves and have given them great memories with their teammates that will last for a lifetime!
