Laying the Foundation
Your High School years are the perfect time to stay involved in sports besides playing. If you are lucky to be on a High School’s Sports team, go out and support the other Sports teams at your school. Who knows you find out that you have a talent that makes you a great organizer. Or maybe you really enjoy being part of the student section. You love being on the sidelines, cheering on your team as loud as you can. Maybe you are good at analytics, which has resulted into volunteering as a score keeper.
There are so many opportunities in High School, where you can find out if being around Sports is something you like. For the lucky ones, it can turn into a fun College job if you are really good at what you are doing. Next, I would like to give you three great examples of Sports Careers that can keep you in Sports for many years to come. Even if you aren’t recruited as an Athlete.

Sports Manager
You are known in the classroom or in your Sports team, to be the one who has a talent for organizing. This can be taking the lead on group assignments or showing a hand during Sports Camps for younger Athletes. There are great student jobs available in College if you like to be on the organizing side of games and events. Many students who started of volunteering as team managers or score clock operators, went on to study Sports Management or Sports Administration.
Both these studies, whether it is as an undergrad or getting your Master’s degree, can lead to great jobs in the exciting sports world. What is important though, is that you start networking. The earlier, the better. Be open to learn from experienced leaders in Sports that went before you. Start following them on their socials is a good start. Even though I am no longer a High School or College Student, I love learning new things. One of my favorite hobbies is Photography, especially shooting pictures of Athletes and Hoopers. I am lucky to have found a couple of exceptional female Sports Photographers. They inspire me daily to get better. What I really admire about them is their love for Photography and giving High School Athletes a platform.
One photographer in particular stands out for me. Her name is Heather aka theheatherexperience on Insta, and she is awesome. Her pictures are really beautiful and tell great stories. She is equally gifted in uplifting Athletes in the nicest way. If you have a moment check out her Instagram page and make sure to read the captions underneath her pictures. Clicking on her drawing takes you right there.
Sports Analyst or Statistician
Maybe you have had a Coach, who gave you the opportunity to learn how to keep game statistics. Or you can focus really well, you like math and have the talent of reading and understanding game analytics. The past years, especially in the bigger sports in the USA, Sports analytics have become a hot topic. The NFL, NBA, MLB and MLS have all been developing ways to help Coaches and players prepare better and inform fans and media.
High School students who have an interest in a career in Sports Analytics, should consider the following studies; Either a Master’s degree in Sports Management or Sports Administration, with an emphasis on Sports Analytics. Or studying Applied Sports Science Analytics which is a newer study offered by some Universities.
Data analytics in Sports is a growing field and might be a great option for you. If you would like to stay active in Sports but you might not get recruited to be on a College Sports team, one of these studies would be worth looking into.

I hope that I have succeeded in showing you that being part of the 93% of College students who aren’t on Varsity Sports teams, will still give you options. The three Career options have hopefully shown you that being creative, or a great organizer or standing out at math, can provide you with a fun Sports career!
‘Extend your Career in Sports’ was written partly because of the love I have for Sports. From a young age on, I knew I wanted to become a Sports Teacher. After my Bachelor’s in Physical Education and having been involved in Pro Basketball, I discovered a talent for organizing and managing. Fast forward, I climbed my way up from Statistician to General Manager in Men’s Basketball. I got the opportunity to work a couple of years for the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles in a leadership role. I decided during the Covid Epidemic to get my Master’s in Sports Management. Which I followed up with becoming an Entrepreneur in Sports Coaching. The result is in front of you… : my platform Reppin Hoopers.
If reading this has encouraged you to explore options related to a Study or a Career in Sports, GO FOR IT! It is the most fun and diverse field to work in. I got your back and if there is anything I can help you with along the way, please feel free to reach out through one of my Workshops or Mini Sessions
